The Cosmetic & Beauty IPL/Laser Regulatory Impact Statement Results are in
Important information for current and future IPL and laser owners and operators
In 2015, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) invited public submissions on the Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) regarding the use of IPLs and lasers for Cosmetic or Beauty Therapy. The results of the public consultation were released by ARPANSA on 6 February 2017.
The IPL and Laser Working Group concluded that there was insufficient evidence to justify the costs-benefits analysis required to proceed with a Decision RIS. A Decision RIS may have recommended a new set of requirements and regulations for IPL and laser operations at a national level.
What will change, moving forward?
Following the review, the working group agreed on the value of creating a uniform guide for the use of IPL and laser devices This guide would address some of the key issues raised during the public consultation and cover frequently asked questions for both IPL/laser operators and their customers. The guide will provide a standardised framework for the terminology, education, training, equipment, patient care and injury reporting for IPL and laser treatments. The guidelines will be developed by ARPANSA as a matter of priority and will be promoted across Australia.
The Global Beauty Group support the development of the guide to educate customers and treatment providers. We’re currently assisting ARPANSA in compiling relevant, accurate and useful information on the use of IPL and laser devices.
What does this mean for me as an IPL/laser treatment provider?
The status quo will remain, which means that you simply continue delivering quality and safe IPL and laser treatment experiences for your customers. There will not be any national or additional regulation for IPL and laser operators. Regulation of the laser treatment industry will continue as is the current situation to be undertaken by the respective states and territories.
As always, we recommend seeking a technology supplier that provides comprehensive training and ongoing clinical and technical support to assist you in providing treatments that are safe and effective for your clients.
“At The Global Beauty Group we believe our model of industry expert training, ongoing clinical and technical support, together with the quality of our devices allow our clients to operate at the highest levels in the industry. We look forward to supporting industry guidelines that will set out a uniform terminology for the sector as well as educate device operators and consumers in best practice for IPL and laser training, equipment, patient care and injury reporting.”
